The journalist used the term "median". However, not everyone understands what 'median' means. For example, your grandparent might not remember what it means.

Explain, in your own words (between 50 to 100 words) what the first 3 paragraphs try to say (about the median). You may include some numbers to help you illustrate your point.

1. The news is trying to say that the median of their income from work,has increased by 3.1% as before the economic downturn and the income rise from \$150 to \$5000 and in their real terms,increase was 0.3%

2. The news is saying that the increase of the median* monthly income from work among resident households increased by 3.1% compared to last year,the economic downturn. The income rose by \$150 to \$5000 which means the previous was \$4850. In real terms, the increase was 0.3%.

*- the "middle man". e.g. 12 15 16 17 18 the median is 16.
2nd eg 18 16 17 12 15 ----> 12 15 16 17 18 ----> median 16.

3. It means the middle monthly income from all the resident households increased by 3.1 per cent.

The news is trying to say that the median(average) of everyone in Singapore's monthly income has increased by 3.1% from the previous year which is now more than what everyone's earning was before the economic downturn in 2009. Basically speaking, everyone is earning more money than before. The average income rose by \$150 from \$4850 to \$5000. In real terms, it increased by 0.3%.

7. The news is trying to say that the median monthly income among resident households have increased by 3.1% which is 1 level higher than the period before the economic downturn.
The median monthly income increased from \$150 to \$5000 which in real terms is only an increase of 0.3%.
It is trying to say that the economy has improved slightly from the period before the economic downturn. Showing that we have made progress in the economic sector.

8. I think that the news is trying to imply that the median which is the middle in this case something like a average of monthly income among resident households increased by 3.1% last year. The income's increased by \$4850 and 0.3%.

9. The first three paragraphs of the news says that the Department of statistics say that among resident households, the middle position of money earned from work had increased by 3.1% last year and higher than before the economic decline in 2009. However it rose by 0.3% in actual terms.

10. The first 3 paragraphs are trying to say that the median monthly income which is the income that is in about the middle of what everyone got, increased by 3.1 per cent last year. Last year, it was S\$150, this year it was S\$5000 and the increase was S\$4850 and in real terms, it was 0.3 percent.
